A Mile in Your Chair

My eight-year-old daughter has Cerebral Palsy and spends most of her time in a wheel chair. I have a good idea of how hard life is for her but I do not know what it is like to actually be her. I have great sympathy for her condition, but it is a sympathy that stands on the outside looking in; I have never walked a mile in her shoes, or rolled a mile in her chair.

However, the scriptures declare that we have a Father in Heaven who not only feels compassion for the sorrowful situation of His children, He actually knows exactly what it is like to suffer their difficult and painful condition. John 1:1 and 14a declare, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. …And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

The One who inhabits the throne has not stood afar off and wished us well. The Lord of Glory clothed Himself in flesh and blood and walked much more than a mile in the shoes of His children. He knows what it is to be tired, alone, hungry, and pained. He knows the difficulties and trials of being human.

Understand this: You are not alone. God knows. He sees. He understands. Our Father, our Lord, not only has sympathy for us, He has empathy with us. Our Lord not only walked a mile in our shoes, He carried our cross, bore our shame, and died our death.

We can pour our hearts out to Him because He understands. Yes, He has rolled much more than a mile in our chair.
