First Things First

What a person chooses to do first will often tell us much about who they, are and what they consider important.

The paroled convict is asked, “What’s the first thing you are going to do when you get out of prison?”
The winner of the election is asked, “What’s the first thing you are going to do after you are sworn into office?”

Your first act, your first deed, will reveal to us what is first in your heart.

Consider John 2:11, “This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.”

What was the first miraculous sign that Jesus performed as the Son of Man?
He turned water into wine at a wedding.
What does this tell us about who Christ is, and what He considers important?
A lot.

Weddings are about relationships, family and new beginnings. Weddings speak of hope and life.
Wine articulates joy, gladness, celebration and fruitfulness.
The first miracle Jesus did was to turn water into wine at a wedding; what a beautiful and telling act.

Jesus has come that we may have life, and that we may have it more abundantly (John 10:10).
I’m not talking about self-centered materialism or hedonism. Jesus’ first miracle was not intended to teach us that life is a party. Far from it.

I think the point of Cana is this: Our Messiah has the ability to make all things new; to take something as common and ordinary as water and make it something as sweet and wonderful as wine. Our Master values joy, life, family, simplicity, and celebration. These are the first things He desires for those who were created in His image.

So, as we seek to serve our King in holiness and right living, let’s never forget what Jesus chose to do first.

Thank you so much for that devotion. My husband and I just had a Sheriff Sale on our townhome on 3/25/11 and are about to file for bankruptcy. This does give us encouragement. I am about to call the bank to find out what our options are.
