Do You Need to Go Get Something?

She had come because she had a need; whether it was for the livestock, for cleaning, or simply because she was thirsty, she had walked to the village well in the heat of the day. And now, sitting here before her was One claimed to have a new kind of water, an amazing sort of water, that can remove the plague of thirst once and for all. Oh, she wanted that. Who wouldn’t want that?
“Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw,” she pleaded.
And in John 4:16, taking the first step toward quenching her spiritual thirst, Jesus replied to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

Ouch. The husband thing.

With an eye towards meeting her greatest need, Jesus had brought up the greatest obstacle standing between her and the new life she so desperately craved. As you probably know, she had had five husbands, and the one she was with now was not actually her husband. So Jesus, in effect, was saying, “Before you can turn and drink from the fountain of life, you must turn away from the cistern of sin and death that you have been drinking from for so long.”

Here is a question I have asked myself, and now I’ll ask you: If Jesus and you were having a conversation about His quenching your current spiritual thirst, would He ask you to go get something? Would He say, “Oh, your thirsty! Excellent. Go and get your television and come here.” Or, “Go get your boyfriend,” or “Go get your computer and come here”?

Is there an obstacle standing between you and the Living Water for which you so anxiously thirst?
For the woman at the well the obstacle was sexual immorality. What is it for you?

Whatever it might be, we must all turn away from the murky cisterns of sinfulness before we can turn and drink from the Fountain of Life. So, if you need to go get something, do it! And the come back and drink.
